Serve Your Community

1 John 3:16–18

16This is how we know what love is: Christ gave his life for us. We too, then, ought to give our lives for others!17If we are rich and see others in need, yet close our hearts against them, how can we claim that we love God?18My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.

Day 1: True Love Shows Itself in Action

Read

1 John 3:16–18 (GNT) This is how we know what love is: Christ gave his life for us. We too, then, ought to give our lives for others! If we are rich and see others in need, yet close our hearts against them, how can we claim that we love God? My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.

Reflect

Dear Friends,

I have often found inspiration from these words in Scripture. They remind me that love is active. Love requires me to open my heart to others. See those in need. Give my life for the good of the people around me. These are not easy words, nor can they be taken lightly.

In our busy lives it is easy to get distracted. Without even meaning to, we put our own comfort first. The writer of 1 John must have recognized these difficulties. While he challenges us, he then graciously softens his tone like a loving father: “My children, love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.”

May He draw you closer to himself through this devotional and stir your heart to see ways you can serve Him in the lives of others.
